Big Changes Ahead for CMMC: What You Need to Know Before April 1

April 1 marks a major milestone for the CMMC community. ISACA has officially assumed CAICO operations, and with that comes a few important updates. If you are working toward a CCP, CCA, or LCCA, or already hold one, this transition matters to you.

Let’s start with the question many of you are asking: Should I wait to take my exam?

The short answer is no. If you are ready to sit for the CCP or CCA before April 1, move forward. If you need more time, take it and test after the transition. The requirements to sit for the exams are not changing.

Another common concern is whether you should create an ISACA account now. There is no need. After April 1, ISACA will automatically create accounts for current CyberAB members who do not already have one. You will receive instructions to complete setup. Also, you do not need to become an ISACA member to pursue a CMMC certification.

What Happens on April 1?

A few meaningful upgrades take effect:

  • CCP and CCA exams will be delivered by PSI, consistent with other ISACA certifications. You will receive preliminary results immediately after completing your exam.

  • New candidates will begin their certification journey through ISACA’s website starting April 1.

  • Updated digital badges will be issued, with simple instructions for claiming them.

  • CPE requirements will align with ISACA’s standard model: 20 CPE per year and 120 over a three year cycle.

  • The CMMC credential pathway now includes four designations: CCP (foundational), CCA (assessor), LCCA (Lead CMMC Certified Assessor), and CCI (CMMC Certified Instructor, coming in early 2026). Renewals before March 31, 2026 are unaffected; ISACA will communicate any changes for those renewing on or after April 1.

If you recertified in 2025 through CyberAB’s delta training and exam, you will receive 20 CPE credits for 2025. That covers your first year under the new cycle. CPE earned for other 8140.3 certifications is expected to count toward CMMC as well.

On March 12, ISACA is hosting a free webinar, CMMC: Requirements, Roles and Professional Credentials. It is a practical walkthrough of the program and career pathways, covering the differences between CCP, CCA, CCI, and LCCA designations, eligibility requirements, and actionable next steps. Ideal for those newer to CMMC. ISACA members also earn one free CPE credit.

You can also meet the team at RSA Conference from March 23 to 26 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco at booth S2167, and at CS5 West at the Gaylord Pacific Resort in San Diego on 16 to 17 April.

More details and updated FAQs will continue to be posted on ISACA’s CMMC page. The transition is moving quickly, and we are committed to keeping you informed every step of the way.
