CCA vs CCP: What Is the Difference and Which One Do You Need?

One of the most common questions I get from people entering the CMMC space is: what is the difference between the CCP and the CCA, and which one should I pursue? The answer depends on what role you want to play. Let me lay it out clearly.

THE SHORT VERSION

The CCP (Certified CMMC Professional) qualifies you to advise and support organizations working toward CMMC compliance. The CCA (Certified CMMC Assessor) qualifies you to conduct official CMMC assessments. They are different jobs with different credentials, and the CCA requires the CCP as a prerequisite.

WHAT THE CCP GETS YOU

The CCP is the foundation credential of the CMMC ecosystem. With it, you can:

•       Consult with defense contractors on their CMMC readiness

•       Help organizations prepare for assessments

•       Work inside an RPO (Registered Practitioner Organization) as a Registered Practitioner

•       Build a consulting practice around CMMC implementation

The CCP does not authorize you to conduct official CMMC assessments. That requires the CCA.

WHAT THE CCA ADDS

The CCA builds on the CCP and authorizes you to actually perform official CMMC Level 2 assessments as part of a C3PAO team. With a CCA, you can:

•       Conduct formal CMMC assessments for defense contractors

•       Work as a credentialed assessor inside a C3PAO

•       Command higher rates as an assessment professional

•       Take on a more senior role in the CMMC ecosystem

The CCA is the more advanced credential. It takes longer to earn and requires passing a separate exam after the CCP.

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Choose the CCP if you want to help companies prepare for CMMC compliance, build a consulting practice, or get your foundation in the CMMC framework before going further.

Choose the CCA path if you want to work as an assessor inside a C3PAO, conduct official assessments, or maximize your earning potential in the CMMC space.

Most serious practitioners end up pursuing both. You need the CCP to get the CCA anyway, so the real question is whether you stop at CCP or keep going.
