What Is the CMMC CCA and Who Needs It?
If you work in the defense industrial base and you want to be the person who actually conducts CMMC assessments, the Certified CMMC Assessor credential is the one you need. Let me break down what it is, who it is for, and why it matters right now.
THE CCA IN PLAIN ENGLISH
The CMMC Certified Assessor (CCA) is a credential issued by ISACA under the CMMC Assessor and Instructor Certification Organization (CAICO) program. It qualifies you to conduct official CMMC assessments as part of a C3PAO team. Without it, you cannot legally perform CMMC Level 2 assessments on defense contractors.
In other words, if you want to get paid to assess companies for CMMC compliance, the CCA is your entry ticket.
WHO ACTUALLY NEEDS THE CCA?
The CCA is designed for cybersecurity professionals who want to work as assessors inside a C3PAO (Certified Third Party Assessment Organization). This includes:
• IT and cybersecurity consultants moving into the defense compliance space
• Current employees at C3PAOs who need to qualify as assessors
• Professionals who already hold the CCP and are ready to level up
• Anyone building a business around CMMC assessment services
If you are a defense contractor trying to get your own organization assessed, you do not need the CCA. That credential is for the people doing the assessing, not the companies being assessed.
WHY THE CCA MATTERS MORE RIGHT NOW
As of April 1, 2026, CMMC exams moved to ISACA and the PSI testing platform. The program is maturing fast, and demand for qualified assessors is growing with every new contract that includes a CMMC requirement.
Companies that have been putting off their assessments are now facing real contractual deadlines. That means C3PAOs need qualified assessors, and the pipeline of credentialed CCAs is still relatively thin.
This is genuinely a good time to get into this space.
WHAT COMES BEFORE THE CCA?
You cannot sit for the CCA exam without first holding the CCP (Certified CMMC Professional) credential. The CCP is the prerequisite. Once you have it, the CCA course builds directly on that foundation.
